this is Finley. this is his voice.

every child has plenty to say

play.talk is an AAC app that turns talking into child's play. Built by one family, for a boy with no speech but a lot to say.

no grids. no programming. just words that stick.

how it happened

a true story, still being written.

the grids weren't working

Hundreds of cells, nested pages, and every new word meant a grown-up sitting down to program it. Finley could spell. So why was he hunting through folders?

so his dad built him a talker

One screen. He types, each word becomes a bright picture, and the sentence is spoken in a real child's voice. Everything he's ever said stays on screen, one tap from being said again.

then it started looking after itself

Pictures draw themselves. New words learn their colours. "Fire engine" snaps into one picture. Suggestions come from his favourite sentences. Nobody programs anything, ever.

and it became the family's

Grandma's photo became her picture. "Wolves" learned it means the football team here. The iPad and the phone keep each other in step. now it's ready for your family too →

a voice that goes everywhere

not locked inside one precious iPad that has to be carried, charged and never dropped. play.talk runs in any browser, on every screen in the house.

same words, same pictures, same voice on every one. they all keep each other in step. forgot the iPad? borrow any phone. their voice is never left at home.

the magic trick

any photo can become a word picture. one tap redraws it to match his other pictures, and it's still completely, recognisably him.

before a real photo of Finley smiling
the real finley
one tap
after the same photo of Finley redrawn as a friendly cartoon picture
finley as a picture!

it works for grandma, the dog, a favourite teddy. the people he loves become the pictures he talks with.

play

say it by playing

not every word wants typing. behind the play button are play pages: little pages made for your child, by you, in plain words, where choosing a word is something to tap, pop, feed or find. a word picked in play is a word said: in their voice, ready for their sentence. no downloads, no coding, no adverts.

matching pairs

his own word pictures as the cards. every pair found is a word spoken

"matching pairs with his word pictures"

pop the balloons

balloons drift up wearing his words. pop one to say it

"balloons float up and he pops them"

who says moo?

the app says an animal, he taps the right one, and has the word to say back

"it says an animal and finley taps it"

what's the time?

pages that teach, too: a clock to practise telling the time, in his own words

"a clock to practise telling the time"

describe it → the app builds it → polish it in plain words ("bigger cards", "a bit slower") → keep it. kept play pages land on every device, work offline, and can even ask for their own drawings: a friendly dragon, drawn once, his forever. not a separate app, not a toy box: it's the talker, played. the same words, the same pictures, the same voice, reached another way. words, chosen by playing

the clever bits

each feature carefully crafted with a human touch.

words
